Computer Science

 

 

The Computer Science Department is dedicated to the task of preparing all high school students for the challenges they will meet at the college level, as well as the challenges of the business world. To that end any student who completes courses in the Computer Science Department will have learned the computing skills necessary to complete college classes. In addition, those students will also be prepared to face the business world with computing knowledge that will give them an opportunity for many different careers.

Beyond the requisite skills, all students will have a thorough appreciation for moral and ethical Christian values that are needed in order to live a fully developed Christian life.

WEB DESIGN
This one semester course is designed to give students a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to web design using HTML coding. Students will learn to create documents, format texts, add graphics, and multimedia in order to create web pages which are representative of web design activities in the real world. Additionally, students will work with online forms, tables, page layouts and cascading style sheets.

POWERPOINT
This one semester course uses a powerful graphics program that allows the student to create professional-looking slide presentations for use in school or business. The course covers the basics of creating slide presentations, speaker's notes, audience handouts and outlines. In addition, it covers creating graphs, tables, and charts as well as customizing these presentations with text manipulation, clip art, animation, and user-created drawings. No computer skills beyond the basics of using a diskette and mouse are necessary.

WORD PROCESSING (Microsoft Office Word)
This one-semester course takes a comprehensive approach to mastering a word processing program.  It is designed to teach the student the features that are most likely to be used in both their personal and business life.  Besides covering the basics of creating and revising documents, this course also covers tables, merging, sorting and outlining.  No computer skills beyond the basics of using a diskette and  mouse are necessary.

DATABASE APPLICATIONS (Microsoft Office Access)
This one-semester course covers the basic concepts and usage of databases.  It teaches a relational database management system that allows the student to access comprehensive information about businesses and individuals.  Once accessed, the student can request certain specific information in various formats to aid in creating reports.  It also covers creating a new database and adding user-defined tables, queries, forms, and reports.  This course will give the student the necessary skills to create and use a database in the home/college/office environment.  No computer skills beyond the basics of using a diskette and mouse are necessary.

SPREADSHEET APPLICATIONS (Microsoft Office Excel)
This one-semester course takes a comprehensive approach to mastering a spreadsheet program which gives the student the ability to perform business and scientific calculations electronically.  It is designed to teach the student the features that are most likely to be used in both their personal and business life.  Besides covering the basics of creating and editing a worksheet, topics covered will be using formulas, financial functions, multiple worksheets and charting.  No computer skills beyond the basics of using a diskette and mouse are necessary.

HONORS PASCAL PROGRAMMING
This is an honors level full-year course available only to seniors.  It is an introduction to a highly structured, advanced computer programming language.  It instructs the student in many of the basic programming constructs used by all programming languages.  This course stresses extensive, independent program writing covering all aspects of programming from basic commands to advanced manipulation of arrays, records, files and matrices.

Prerequisite: Algebra 2 and teacher of course approval
