Debate Team

In the fall of 2002, the Lehigh Valley Interscholastic Conference organized a Debate league for all 12 schools to participate in. The Eastern (BECA, Freedom, Easton, Northampton and Nazareth) and Western (Whitehall, Parkland, Allentown Central Catholic, Emmaus, Allen and Dieruff) divisions hold 4 competitions from October to January to determine which two teams from each division will go to the semi-finals in February.  Debate competitions are held in the afternoon of a school day at one of the participating schools.  Students compete on teams of 2-4 debaters and we are allowed 4 teams in competitions.  Other students can participate as alternates and observers.

There is one debate question for the year and the research and preparation is done during September and October. We meet after school for discussion and practice, but much of the work is done by the students on their own. The librarian, English, and Social Studies teachers are resources. Once positive and negative speeches are prepared, the students decide who will deliver the speeches and who will do cross-examination and rebuttal. This is a great activity for students who enjoy challenging the statements and ideas of others and for those who enjoy researching and teasing out the pros and cons of societal issues.
