Forensics
Forensics at BECA is a group of self-motivated students who compete as
a team but are individuals with many different skills and interests.
Forensics is a great activity for those students looking to add an
intellectual or dramatic challenge to their resume or just to get over the
phobia we all have of public speaking. We generally meet after school in
September and October to organize ourselves and practice. After that we
meet to go to competitions on Saturdays and then review the results. Most
of the research and preparation of speeches is done by the students on
their own time. The Librarian and English teachers can help. As long as
the students keep in touch to arrange practices, it does not interfere
with most after-school sports.
For the past few years, BECA has participated in the Allentown Diocese
Forensics League. The current schools involved are Notre Dame, Allentown
Central Catholic, Boyertown, Central Catholic Reading, Oley Valley,
Panther Valley, Phillipsburg and Southern Lehigh. The three league
competitions take place on Saturdays in November, December and January at
one of the schools, with a qualifying tournament in March leading to the
national Competition over Memorial Day weekend.
Forensics events include:
Lincoln-Douglas Debate - one person on value issues
Students Congress - like a mini-legislature
Declamation for 9th & 10th graders - speeches written by
others
Original Oratory - persuasive or informative
Extemporaneous Speaking - on current events
Oral Interpretation of Prose and Poetry
Dramatic Performance for one or two students
The Forensics Club will not
compete during the 2007-2008 school year.
